On October 8 the WHRSD and the WFT collaborated on an evening program for parents of WHRSD students at W-H High School. Katy Boucher, a renowned educator, gave an informative and entertaining talk on “Friendship and Connection, A Program for Parents”.

MS. Boucher spoke for an hour on topics like defining friendship, understanding kids’ social world and how friendship involves a skill and process. It does not happen overnight. She stressed that the role of social power in a young person’s life is complicated and is often wrought with being bullied or being ostracized. She gave suggestions on how parents might talk and listen to their children so they will engage. She emphasized that it can be especially difficult to get boys to “open up”. Children need to know it is alright to talk with mom or dad. They should be encouraged not to let things bother them or go unaddressed.

The program concluded with a Q & A for those in attendance.
